The Bayhead Road Rehabilitation Project at the Port of Durban is on schedule, with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) working to improve port access and road safety for cargo transport.

Work, which began in June 2025, has moved smoothly from Phase 1 to Phase 2 without disrupting vessel traffic or cargo flow.

Phase 2 targets the outbound carriageway from the Shell Garage to the Rotterdam Intersection and the inbound carriageway from Wagtail to Langeberg.

Crews are replacing old asphalt with new Bitumen-Stabilised Material (BSM) and asphalt layers while repairing kerbs, channels, and stormwater manholes to reinforce road durability and drainage.

By upgrading these sections, the project boosts the structural strength of Bayhead Road and ensures more resilient connectivity to the port.

To enhance safe cargo movement, TNPA is installing new signage, clearer lane markings, reflective studs, and speed-calming features along the busy logistics corridor.

Regular consultations with shipping lines, port users, and nearby businesses keep operations transparent and allow stakeholders to shape implementation with minimal impact on maritime trade.

According to Acting Port Manager Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, the Bayhead Road works serve as a catalyst for smoother port logistics and stronger supply chain reliability at Durban, South Africa’s premier trade gateway.

He emphasized that modernizing port-linked infrastructure safeguards cargo flows and helps secure South Africa’s competitiveness in global shipping.
