Nigeria’s Dangote refinery will soon ship petrol beyond West Africa for the first time as it expands into the global market.

According to a source,  Mercuria, an international commodity trader, plans to load a 90,000 metric ton consignment of petrol from the 650,000 bpd refinery on June 22, with Asia as the destination.

Until now, all petrol exports from the refinery remained within West African borders.

This new export marks Dangote’s intent to establish itself as a competitive force in the global fuel supply chain.

Previously, the company supplied petrol to countries like Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa, reducing their dependence on European fuel sources.

A Dangote refinery spokesperson noted that the company prioritizes the highest bidder, giving buyers the freedom to deliver the cargo wherever they choose.

Industry experts interpret the move as a reflection of the refinery’s operational reliability and international relevance.

Clementine Wallop, director at Horizon Engage, said the refinery’s readiness to meet both domestic demand and international supply shows its growing status as a key petrol supplier.
