The Regional Maritime University (RMU) and DNV Benmarine Services (BmS) have signed an agreement to begin producing welding electrodes locally in Ghana. The signing took place on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the university.
The project is expected to reduce dependence on imports, support local manufacturing, and create jobs. By producing electrodes that meet international standards, Ghana could serve not only its local market but also industries in oil and gas, maritime, and engineering across the region.
At the ceremony, RMU’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Jethro W. Brooks, thanked DNV BmS for the collaboration. He explained that production would start soon, with a focus on supplying local demand, creating opportunities for young people, and supporting the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy.
Dr Brooks also noted that the partnership shows how universities and industry can work together to solve practical challenges and give students hands-on skills.
Mr Frederick Asamoah, Managing Director of DNV BmS, said research had already started, showing that local materials could be used for large-scale production. He added that the next step would be to send samples abroad for testing and certification to meet global standards.
He attended the signing with Deputy Managing Director Mr Bernard Lomotey Agbloe and Administrator Ms Mercy Otoo, who were also acknowledged for their contributions.
The agreement reflects RMU’s commitment to working with industry partners to support Ghana’s growth, provide training opportunities, and expand job prospects for young people.
