Tanzania has launched a new roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry service to the Comoros Islands, creating a direct maritime route for vehicles and cargo across the Mozambique Channel.
The service is operated by Serdal International, the logistics arm of AD Ports with growing operations in East Africa. Its vessel, MV Serdal (IMO 9856775), completed its maiden voyage earlier this month, sailing from Dar es Salaam to Moroni, the capital of Comoros.
Built in 2018, the 306-dwt ferry measures 50 metres in length and 13 metres in width, with capacity for 45 vehicles and 190 passengers.
According to Serdal International’s managing director, Mr Serdal Ahmed, the ferry accommodates trucks, cars, and containerised cargo, streamlining trade between Tanzania and Comoros.
Ahmed highlighted the region’s long-standing need for a reliable RoRo option, noting that the new route reduces transit times and avoids delays from transshipment.
The service also connects Moroni, the main port on Grande Comore, with Mutsamudu on Anjouan, improving travel options for both residents and visitors.
The MV Serdal will initially operate weekly, with frequency set to grow as demand increases. Port authorities in Moroni welcomed the initiative, saying it will strengthen bilateral trade and improve access to essential goods.
The Comoros Islands depend heavily on maritime imports, and the new service provides a significant upgrade for commercial and humanitarian shipments.
While Serdal International has not revealed future fleet expansion plans, the company confirmed the MV Serdal complies with IMO safety standards and is fully equipped for tropical operations.
Photos of the launch show the vessel docked in Moroni as vehicles from Tanzania and Comoros disembark, underscoring the renewed maritime connection.
