The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has pledged closer collaboration with Tanzania to strengthen maritime operations and regional ties.

A 19-member Tanzanian delegation visited the NSC Headquarters in Lagos to explore ways to adapt Nigeria’s port economic regulatory framework for their own maritime sector.

The delegation aimed to draw from Nigeria’s expertise to grow Tanzania’s indigenous shipping capacity.

NSC Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr. Pius Akutah, welcomed the opportunity for bilateral cooperation to boost shipping activities in East Africa.

The partnership will cover technical assistance, inter-port collaboration, capacity building, and infrastructure sharing to accelerate Tanzania’s maritime growth.

Dr. Akutah praised Tanzania’s plans to open its shipping industry to private investors, noting that the scale of maritime investment demands private sector leadership.

He stressed that transport connectivity is key for any nation aspiring to become a maritime hub under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Selestine Gervas Kakele, reaffirmed their commitment to learning from Nigeria’s regulatory framework and positioning the NSC as a strategic partner.

Deputy Attorney General of Tanzania, Sammel Marco Manene, acknowledged Nigeria’s strong trade performance in West Africa and expressed Tanzania’s interest in leveraging its own strategic location for trade gains.

Both countries agreed on the need to deepen trade relations, maintain ongoing dialogue, and exchange knowledge to drive maritime growth across the continent.
