Transnet National Ports Authority has entered into a 25-year Terminal Operator Agreement with the WASAA–CEF Joint Venture to build and run a new liquefied petroleum gas terminal at the Island View Precinct in the Port of Durban.
The R1.4 billion project supports South Africa’s Just Energy Transition by promoting cleaner energy use in the gas sector and helping reduce emissions across major industries.
The terminal is expected to begin operations in 2027. It will offer 50,000 cubic meters of LPG storage and handle up to 800 cubic meters per hour of heated LPG, supplying industrial users and households across KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape hinterland.
The Island View terminal site sits close to Durban’s Bluff suburb, a location that continues to raise concerns among nearby communities.
TNPA Acting Chief Executive Mohammed Abdool said the agreement will reinforce Durban’s position as a key logistics hub and regional transshipment center while opening up opportunities for local businesses. He noted that more than half of the industrial development budget will go to black-owned, women-led, and youth-led enterprises, as well as businesses owned by people living with disabilities.
Nokwanele Qonde, a director at the WASAA–CEF Joint Venture, said the collaboration will help put in place the infrastructure needed to expand the use of LPG as a cleaner option for homes, businesses and industry.
