DP World has secured a 10-year extension to its concession at Angola’s Port of Luanda, committing an additional US$90 million to expand the terminal and increase its planned capacity beyond the original target.

The extension will allow DP World to operate the Luanda Multipurpose Terminal until 2051. The expansion programme aims to raise the terminal’s annual handling capacity to approximately 1.2 million TEU.

Over the next two years, DP World will invest in extending the quay by 222 metres and expanding the terminal’s operating area by about 10 hectares.

The company will also install three additional ship-to-shore cranes and 12 semi-automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes to improve cargo handling operations.

Once completed, the upgraded terminal will be able to handle two Post-Panamax vessels simultaneously.

DP World expects the new infrastructure to help the terminal manage rising trade volumes, accommodate larger vessels and improve Angola’s connections to international markets.

The additional investment will bring DP World’s total investment in Angola since it began operating the terminal in 2021 to more than US$350 million.

According to DP World, annual container volumes have increased from approximately 177,000 TEU in 2021 to more than 350,000 TEU under its management.

The expansion exceeds the original plans announced when DP World secured the concession in January 2021.

Under the initial 20-year agreement, DP World planned to invest approximately US$190 million in infrastructure, equipment and technology, with a target of increasing annual capacity to around 700,000 TEU.

The latest expansion will raise the planned capacity to approximately 1.2 million TEU, positioning the terminal to handle significantly larger cargo volumes than originally anticipated.

DP World said the extended concession and additional investment will support Angola’s role as a regional trade gateway and improve the country’s access to global markets.
