EDECS Group, a major EPC contractor in the MEA region, has secured a contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards at Terminal 1 of Dar es Salaam Port, operated by DP World Dar es Salaam. Construction is already underway, adding to EDECS’ work on marine and logistics infrastructure across the region.
Under the contract, EDECS is designing and constructing seven cargo and material handling yards covering a combined 90,000 m², along with gates and supporting utilities. The project includes infrastructure upgrades, systems to support digital yard management, improved cargo storage and handling facilities, and engineering solutions focused on efficiency and long-term use. EDECS is also installing a fire protection network across the entire port, including areas outside the original project scope, as well as a high mast lighting system to improve safety, security, and operations across the port.
Dar es Salaam Port is Tanzania’s largest and busiest port, handling more than 90 per cent of the country’s international maritime trade. It also serves as a key maritime gateway for seven landlocked countries in East and Central Africa. The port supports Tanzania’s trade while playing an important role in regional connectivity and the country’s Vision 2050 goal of becoming a leading logistics and trade hub in Africa.
The port has now exceeded 30 million tonnes in annual throughput as demand for logistics capacity continues to grow across East and Central Africa. The increase also supports Tanzania’s move towards more technology-driven port operations and stronger infrastructure. Terminal 1 is already showing the impact of the modernization work, recording its highest monthly container throughput of 46,582 TEUs in July 2026, compared with 13,779 TEUs in May 2024.
